I can count on one hand how many non-black men I’ve dated inside the United States. But now that I’m living abroad, I might need your fingers, Clutchettes. After studying abroad in Europe, and now, living in Brasil, I’ve had the opportunity to explore my options as a single woman. In my adult years, I’ve never been closed off to dating non-black men in the United States. But I also have not been pro-active in being open to those experiences. Thanks to the romantic aura of wanderlust, plus some all-shades-of-beautiful men, it seems like living outside of America has officially made me an equal opportunity dater.

“I’ve dated interracially for years now and it’s just not a big deal for me. I find men of all colors, creeds, and walks of life attractive, and don’t limit myself to Oneika Raymond dating one particular race,” says avid traveler . “I am currently dating a white European guy, but before that was involved with a black man from the Caribbean. That being said, I have seen a lot more interracial couples outside of North America, particularly in London, where I live. I’ve seen way more black girl/white guy pairings here than anywhere else I’ve ever traveled.”

I have to admit. I found my experiences studying abroad in London to be the same, and in several other parts of Europe. Black women are enjoying relationships with men of many hues. And it seems like our interracial dating prospects are far more open. It’s one thing to be sought after as purely an exotic representation of black beauty and potential sexual commodity. But it’s another thing to be admired for our physical exquisiteness, multifaceted cultures, powerful intellect, and unique personalities. Black women are being loved as multidimensional human beings abroad and by more than just our brothas.

Jennifer Poe, who once lived in Argentina, confesses, “I notice when I’m abroad, men that are of a different race than me are more vocal and bold about approaching me. When I’m back in the States, they will check me out, but not approach me. I think dating interracially is easier abroad.”

Many black women who have traveled abroad have reported the same. In countries that we are particularly a noticeable minority, we often get more attention than in the United States. Call it coincidence or maybe just that we’re not paying close enough attention on American soil, but the flirting tends to be more apparent.

Interracial dating: Should black women find love outside America?

Nicole Blake adds her perspective, and reveals, “In Germany and many parts of Europe, there just aren’t that many black women here. The men that have been curious about dating interracially don’t have the same access to black women that the men in the United States have. I think this leads to a greater appreciation almost to the point of worship. It’s not to say that this lack of seeing black women doesn’t also lead to a fair amount of sexualization and being the object of one’s fetish but this distinction is one I also had to make in the States, is he interested in me for me, or do I mark off the Black girl check box?”

It’s a fair question, one that makes many black women think twice before jumping into the interracial dating arena. Of course, with any human interaction comes curiosity, but if we are indeed just a check box on a non-black man’s checklist, it’s certainly fair for us to call foul.

Blake continues, “Dating interracially can also be more complex in Europe. As Chris Rock once said when talking about black people’s relationship to White Americans, ‘we don’t got time to dice white people up into little groups.’ This is not an effective strategy for dating men abroad. In Europe, there are the French, Spaniards, Italians, Germans, Brits, Scandinavians, etc. All these men, aside from speaking various languages, exist in different cultural contexts with different dating norms. Who makes the first move, kissing, sex on the first date, the definition of what a date actually is: these vary from country to country. It takes a bit of effort in trying to sort how it all works.”

Just as black women are not monoliths, neither are our non-black male dating prospects. While non-American cultures might facilitate easier introductions and more interracial dating opportunities, those of us who are interested should be invested in exploring different dating styles that may reign in a particular country. What you may interpret through your personal cultural references may not be your potential mate’s way of thinking. But all in all, it’s important to be open while dating in general, and for those open to interracial love, perhaps leaving the country is the perfect way to fill your travel craving and find romance.

In the lead up to Valentine’s Day, the pursuit of love is on people’s minds.

On Monday we reported on a comprehensive study of online dating. The week is nearly over, but that story is still generating the most comments on CBC’s Science and Technology page.

Few of you were surprised that online dating has become the second most common way for couples to meet, and that the phenomenon has grown rapidly in popularity and social acceptance.

Many CBC readers responded to the study by offering their own experiences with online dating. Tim Wooden emailed us to explain it this way:

“Looking on a web dating site is like shopping in the grocery store: lots of meat, some veggies and whole lot of processed stuff. Packaging is important and unless the person has a video shot, no sampling available until the first date. Oh and everyone lies, some a little, others quite a lot. Lots of misses in my case, but also success: married and happy for 5 years.”

Everyone knows Valentine’s Day is really just for girls. Not too many guys get upset if their gal doesn’t plan something or buy them a gift. On the other hand, if the guy doesn’t do something special for his girl, he becomes the biggest jerk on Earth.

Now to your question.

You said you just started dating her a week ago. If you really like her, you have to do something with her for Valentine’s Day. The problem is that you have to tread very lightly and really put some thought into what you plan to do.

Buying her a gift is nice, but that can send mixed messages. Flowers, for example, are great, but what kind? Roses are very nice, but they can be taken as, “Wow, this guy bought me roses! He must really like me a lot.” Or if you send a mixed bouquet, you set yourself up for, “He sent me mixed flowers. He just went through the motions of getting me something.”

In my experience with women, I have found they are delicate creatures with a deep thought process. They tend to think about things a lot more than dumb guys do. I’ve also learned that no matter how hard I try to do the right thing, I always screw it up. This explains why I’m single.

Going to the movies on Valentine’s Day is a good idea, but then again you have to be careful what you take her to see. If you take her to a chick movie, you’ll be the sensitive guy who’s really into her. If you take her to the redneck action movie with guns and explosives, you’ll be the insensitive jerk you probably really are.

When you just start dating, Valentine’s Day is very tricky. You can really screw yourself up. Like I said before, all the pressure falls on the guy. No matter what, it’s our fault if something goes wrong. I really think they should quit calling it Valentine’s Day and call it Prove Yourself to your Girl Day.

Now, before all you girls start hating me, understand this: I like Valentine’s Day. I like to think I’m an old-fashioned romantic. I like buying gifts, taking girls out to dinner, and so on. The sad fact is that the older I get, there are fewer times I get a chance to do this. I don’t even have a date for Valentine’s Day. It’s pretty sad when you’re happy you have to work that night. I can at least watch everyone else enjoy their hot dates.

What I really think you should do is call your girl and say, “Hey, I’d like to take you out on Valentine’s Day. Come over my house, I’ll cook dinner and then we can go have a drink somewhere.” For that matter, come to Liquid Assets and I can wait on you and give you pointers while you drink. God knows I won’t be doing anything else.

I had a good friend from Sussex County who had the same problem you’re having. Finally, he brainstormed the greatest, most romantic, original Valentine’s Day message for his gal. It had been snowing that morning, so he drank a 12 pack of Natural Light and peed “Happy Valentine’s Day, Roberta Anne” in the snow. Then, he ran inside her trailer and brought her out blindfolded to show her. To this day, I still get a tear in my eye when I ride by their trailer park and see all seven of their kids playing in the yard. I can’t help but think it was his Valentine’s Day creativity that landed him the girl of his dreams. I just hope I’m invited to their wedding.

Friday night is date night and women all over campus are preparing to get their hair right and model their outfits in front of their roommates to decide on the perfect thing to wear.

It’s no secret that when it comes to dating and the race to tie the knot, BYU is doing victory laps around most schools.

“I think it’s scary how fast people get married here at BYU,” said Kendra Sherman, a senior from The Woodlands, Texas, studying piano performance. “I’ve heard of people getting engaged after only knowing each other for two weeks.”

While dating culture at the Y may be comparable to a rampant disease, navigating the dating jungle is just as foreign to the fresh freshmen as it is to the super seniors. This is most likely because marriage is so incredibly important that students often over-complicate the issue.

“What modern women looking for? A guy who has a good sense of humor, someone down to earth, someone that is not head over heels in love with themselves,” said Mark Ogletree, an associate visiting professor in the Department of Church History and Doctrine, in an email. “They want a guy who loves the gospel, is well balanced and doesn’t come on too strong.”

Along with Ogletree, women are lining up and echoing his words.

“I wanted my dates to be kind, funny, honest and patient,” said Kamrie Kingston, a senior from The Woodlands, Texas, studying exercise and wellness. “If something went wrong I didn’t want him to get angry and frustrated.”

When modern women finally decide their hair is perfect and the outfit is chosen, their thoughts focus completely on their date. Tiffany Wixom, a senior from Draper, studying art history, said her date will be evaluated from the beginning of the date until the end.

“When he opens the door, I want him to smile and be happy to see me,” Wixom said. “I want conversation in the car, and for him to be interested in me. Lastly, I want a fun activity where we can talk and have fun.”

Like a bad math problem, finding the right date is something that men often fear, but women aren’t expecting an extravagant plan, just something simple.

“Effective dates [involve getting] to know a person,” Ogletree said. “Build something together, solve a problem, do a service project of some kind, do something that is physical and perhaps a little strenuous. You cannot only see each other when you are all ‘foo-fooed’ up. ”

First impressions are important, and they can mean the difference between future dates and the silent treatment. To achieve date number two, women emphasize that men must live up to the dating code.

“Guys need to open the doors, be willing to pay for a meal and focus on their dates,” Sherman said.

Every modern women is different and each has her own needs, but it is the responsibility of the guys to step up, be the best they can be and cherish their dates.

“At the end of the day all I want is good conversation, no awkwardness, a nice good-bye hug and maybe a follow-up text,” Wixom said.
